Redecorating? Ask yourself these important questions...

    Whether it’s a single purchase or an entire room, it is important to know a little about yourself, family members, and lifestyle. Listing some obvious facts about your home will help you plan and accomplish your decorating goals. Your answers to the following questions will be most helpful as you begin your decorating project.
  1. How many people will be using this room?
  2. Should your furnishings be pet and children-friendly?
  3. List existing furnishings that you plan to keep in the room (make sure to include the following: wood pieces, upholstery, audio/video, lighting, window treatments, and flooring.
  4. Include samples of paint, carpet, window treatments for reference.
  5. List special audio/visual needs.
  6. Any special hobbies or activities?
  7. When was the last time you purchased furniture?
  8. How do you picture your new room?
  9. Favorite color scheme?
  10. What colors don’t you like?
  11. Indicate your pattern and fabric preferences such as solid; plaid; floral; texture; stripe; paisley; geometric; leather; velvet; tapestry.
  12. How do you feel about mixing patterns?
  13. List other facts that may be important - family allergies, specials needs, etc.
  14. Note important measurements, such as room dimensions, door openings, etc.
  15. What price range are you planning to invest in your room?   $0 - $2,500   $2,500-$5,000   $5,000 and up
    Once you’ve accumulated these facts, you will easily eliminate certain categories and begin to focus on what you do like. With your homework completed, now it’s time for the fun part... shopping! Your “plan” will give you and your sales associate some direction, and it will help you stay focused.

    Don’t get too hung up on the different styles of furniture. Although there are many style names, furniture basically falls into three categories: traditional, contemporary/lifestyle, or transitional. And within those categories, you will find several styles to choose from.

    If you’re furnishing an empty space, remember to start with the largest pieces – such as sofas, entertainment centers, and then accent with chairs, tables, lamps, wall decor, etc.

    Ultimately, you’re the person who has to live with your purchase, so do your homework before you begin. You’ll love the results!
