Have you ever taken a quiz to find your decorating style? If you have, you may discover that you’ve been labeled with a decorating style that doesn’t add up. (Who comes up with these “labels”, anyway?) There’s no law that states you are allowed to use just one style in your home. As home fashions have changed through the years, so do our furniture preferences. So we all end up with a little of this…more of that, until we feel comfortable with our look. No wonder it’s hard to give your style a defined name!
Another myth-buster: Rooms don’t have to serve a specific function. In the dining room, a beautiful dining table and china buffet is wonderful… if that’s your style. But if your family doesn’t need a formal dining room, change it to a home office. You are no longer bound by convention. If you’re a “chair person” then fill your room with comfortable chairs. Where is it written that you must have a sofa?
You may love contemporary furniture, but there’s nothing wrong with placing an antique chest in your family room. The point of this room is to enjoy the memories that are made here. Why not display family heirlooms? Break out the framed photos and show off your prized possessions.
And if you like to follow trends, you can go along with the latest home fashions without going overboard. If you are afraid of change, replace just one piece in your room to compliment your existing furniture. And if you like it, take the next step by adding new colors and accessories. Before you know it, you’ve created a new style!
